Do not fill your bag beyond 40 pounds. This way it is easier to handle and easier to shape to make it effective wall.

Take in mind that sandbags could deteriorate from getting wet and drying frequently. It is recommended to use a durable sandbag such as burlap sacks.

Stacking Sandbags

When you are protecting your home from any disaster such as flood, sandbags are used to divert not only water but also debris away from your home. This does not mean that the sandbags are tight seal where water will not be able to pass through. However, if properly filled and stacked, it could significantly reduce the amount of water that will seep through it. There are numerous ways on how to keep as much water out as possible and they are the following:

  • Prepare the site where you will put the sandbags
  • You could place them against a building or you could create a barrier/wall
  • Clear the area – remove all debris and huge sticks
  • Clear the site of ice or snow
  • Tie the bags towards the top end of the bag, flatten it and tie the end in case you need to transport the sandbags
  • If your sacks are untied, fold the area of the sack that is not filled, tuck it underneath the sack
  • Put the bags wherein the open end will be facing against the expected water flow
  • To create a sandbag barrier, keep up to two layers only unless you plan to create a pyramid barrier
  • The barrier’s base should be wider for more stability
  • Step on top of each bag to make it more compact
  • Remember, the tighter the bags are the less water could seep through
  • For sliding glass doors, windows, create a seal to prevent water by placing a plastic sheet on the ground, up against the wall and stack sandbags on top.

Can Sandbags be reused?

Sandbags are temporary barriers only. Unused and unfilled bags could be stockpiled for later use as long as they are properly stored. Bags that have been filled could deteriorate over time. Hence, if you store them after it has been used and reuse it another time, it could be not as effective as it has been. Hence, it is recommended that you dispose properly used sandbags as recommended by your environment protection department.

Protect your Home from Flooding

Sandbag will no longer be effective if your area is already flooded. Hence, prepare way ahead and protect yourself and your personal belongings. If possible, move your important things to a safer place. You should also consider all the possible entry points where water could go through – such as air bricks, doorways, utility service points, cable entry points, etc.

Important information – it will take at least 6 sandbags to keep 20 cm or 17.8” depth of water for a door opening. Your sandbag should be at least 15kg (33 lbs).

Keep in Mind…

When there is a forecast of flooding, there will be limited supply which means demand will be high. Hence, your local authority might not have enough supply of sandbags to provide everyone. Do not worry as you could purchase unfilled sandbags and sand from local hardware stores.

In case of emergencies, you could use pillow cases or garbage bags as alternatives. Fill them up with garden soil. However, it is still best for you to be prepared all the time and stock up on sandbags especially when there is no crisis and when the demand is not high.

Do not rely and assume that your local authorities will provide you with all the sandbags that you will need when flooding happens. Remember to prepare and take responsibility in protecting your own home from flooding. Remember local authorities’ priority would be to protect the general public and not only you.
