Chop saws are powerful tools that are designed to make straight cuts through wood and metal. They are designed to make precise and neat square cuts at a fast pace, with a high degree of accuracy. They are built strong and allow operators to make cut after cut in rapid succession with ease. And while the standard cut these saws perform is a 90 degree square cut, many current models also pivot 45 degrees in both directions to allow for angled cuts as well.
Many professional contractors, from carpenters to plumbers use these fantastic tools every day and their importance and benefits can’t be understated. You’ll find chop saws all over the place, including big manufacturing warehouses but the saws we will focus on in this article are the smaller, portable saws that are commonly used in construction, renovations, and even for DIY work around the home.

- RPM: 1300
- Blade size: 14 inch
- Weight: 47 lbs
- Miter cuts: Yes
- Warranty: 3 years, 1 year free service, 90 day money-back guarantee
The Pros
- Smooth and neat cuts
- Cutting disk stays cool
- No burrs
- Performs cuts at a very fast rate
The Cons
– More expensive than some other saws on this list
Overview
Our number one pick of the bunch when it comes to chop saws is the DeWalt DW872. It’s a cold saw that’s predominantly designed to slice through metal like butter. And because it’s DeWalt made, it does just that. A cold saw is designed to cut metal but instead of using abrasive cutting discs like many other chop saws, they feature a toothed blade which works to transfer the heat generated while cutting into the shavings and dust, allowing both the blade and the material being cut to stay cool. You may find, that when cutting heavy material a small amount of heat and sparks might be produced but it will only be minimal.
These saws are great for cutting pipes and things like handrails, as the smooth cut leaves behind no burrs on your work. But these saws don’t just stop at metal, they will cut a wide variety of material including wood. The specially designed blades are carbide-tipped, making them very durable and able to tackle everything thrown their way. It’s also a super fast saw to cut with, helping you work more efficiently and with greater accuracy.
At 55 lbs, it’s not the lightest saw on the market but it is still light enough to be portable and easy to transfer from site to site. The extra weight is no issue and is well worth it when you look at the build quality, cut quality, and durability of these fantastic saws.
It comes with DeWalt’s 3 year warranty which includes 1 year free servicing and a 90 day money-back guarantee.

- Miter cuts: Yes
- Warranty: 3 years, 1 year free service, 90 day money-back guarantee
The Pros
- Great value for money

- Easy to carry and transport
The Cons
- Doesn’t feature the quick change blade system that the DW28715 model has
Overview
Another excellent chopping saw manufactured by the guys at DeWalt. And you can pick this one up for a very reasonable price. So it’s a no-brainer that the DW28710 takes the prize for the top value for money saw on this list.
It features a powerful and reliable 15 amp DeWalt motor and a 14 inch abrasive blade that makes short work of a range of materials. It also comes with a very handy quick-lock vice that is built into the saw and allows you to make precise and controlled cuts at a rapid rate. It also comes with a pivoting miter adjustment that allows you to make cuts at 90 and 45 degrees.
The blade is made from aluminum oxide that has been designed to last longer while continuously producing smooth and neat cuts. The D shaped handle is also very comfortable and ergonomic, making it easier to get stuck-in and work for long periods without cramping or feeling fatigued. I also like the lightweight and compact design that allows for easy transport and storage. It’s great for moving from jobsite to jobsite.
And while it doesn’t come with the super-handy convenience of the quick change blade system that some other DeWalt models feature, the spindle lock and onboard wheel changing wrench still work very well and allow you to get the job done in no time at all.

You can sum up the PORTER-CABLE PCE700 in just two adjectives – reliable and affordable. That’s what makes it our number 1 pick for the top budget-range chop saw available on the market. It’s ideal for metal but will also handle wood and other materials and features a quick-release material clamp for secure and hazard-free cutting.
The powerful 15 amp, 3800 RPM motor is well worth the low price tag and the large 14 inch blade gives impressive results every time. Miter cuts up to 45 degrees are also possible thanks to this saw’s pivoting fence.
It comes with a sturdy steel base that helps to provide stability during operation and blade changes are quick and effortless thanks to the well-designed spindle lock. This fast cutting-speed makes it a great option for professional contractors as well as DIY enthusiasts and home renovators. Its powerful 15 amp motor and carbide-tipped teeth help this saw to produce smooth and precise cuts that are free from metal burrs, making it perfect for cutting tubing, conduit, pipe and, angle iron. 6. Evolution Power Tools EVOSAW380 Chop Saw
Features –
- Motor: 15 Amp 4 HP
- RPM: 2400
- Blade size: 15 inch
- Weight: 55 lbs
- Miter cuts: Yes
- Warranty: 3 year limited warranty
The Pros
- Smooth cuts with no burrs
- Blade stays cool while cutting
- Compatible with a wide range of blades
The Cons
- Poor debris collection tray quality
- Miter difficult to adjust
Overview
Another cold chop saw option from Evolution Power Tools, this time featuring a larger 15 inch blade, allowing you to tackle the bigger jobs. It’s great for cutting steel plate, pipe, scaffolding, metal sheets, cladding, and heaps more. It’s great for use in industrial and construction environments. It’s over double the weight of the 7-1/4 inch RAGE 4 model so it’s not as portable but it is still light enough to be a viable portable option on the job site when cutting bigger material.
Being a cold saw, the carbide-tipped toothed blade will cut at a much faster rate than an abrasive cutting disc, leaving behind a clean cut without burrs. Cold saws also have the added bonus of staying cool when cutting, leaving the blade and work material cool during operation. Its high-torque gearbox combined with its powerful 1800 watt motor allows the blade to slice through metal with ease.
It has a solid aluminum base construction designed for use in tough environments and the blade is built to last much longer than an abrasive disc, saving you time and money.
The main drawback of this saw is the lack of quick release adjustment options. Adjustments must be made with the included wrench set, lengthening the time it takes to change the cut setup. And although not a deal-breaker in my books, the debris collection tray isn’t very effective.
You can find this saw for a marginally cheaper price than our top pick DeWalt DW872 but for me, the slight saving isn’t worth it. Personally, unless you need the bigger 15 inch blade, I’d go for the DeWalt.

- RPM: 4000

The Cons
- Not compatible with all blades

Overview
The D28715 14 inch chop saw from DeWalt is designed to slice through thick metals and plastics with its powerful and reliable 5.5 horsepower, 4000 RPM motor. Because it’s DeWalt, you can rest assured that you are purchasing a high-quality tool that is designed to last under tough conditions.
My favorite feature of this saw, and what sets it apart from other similar chop saws, is the quick-change blade feature that allows users to change the blade without the use of a wrench or blade key. The only downside of this feature is that while other blades are compatible, not all 14 inch blades will fit this saw perfectly. For this reason, it’s best to stick with DeWalt blades. Luckily, because DeWalt is such a popular brand, you’ll have no problem finding blades at most hardware stores, online shops and even at some superstores.
The D28715 also features a quick-lock vice, which makes holding your material in the correct position easy and fast. It can make 45 degree miter cuts thanks to its adjustable fence and has a large cutting capacity of 5 inches for round material and 4-1/2 x 6-1/2 for rectangular pieces.
The base of the saw features 4 pre-drilled holes so it can be easily attached to a workbench and the extra-wide, solid steel base helps improve stability when cutting longer material. I also like the heavy-duty lock-down pin that keeps the saw locked in a carry position without having to rely on a chain.
It’s also very comfortable to operate thanks to the ergonomically designed “D” handle that helps to reduce fatigue and discomfort and increase productivity.
This saw is a favorite on the construction site and is backed up by DeWalt’s 3 year, 1 year free service warranty. And it has a 90 day money-back guarantee.

- Adjustable depth levels
- Trigger lock system
The Cons
- Weak base
Overview
The Bosch 3814 features a 14 inch, 36-grit aluminum oxide cutting wheel and a 15 amp motor powerful enough to slice through metal like butter. It has a cutting capacity of 5 inches for round material and 4 inches for square pieces. It also features a trigger lock button, located above the trigger switch, allowing users to rest their finger during continuous cutting jobs. You’ll also find a spindle lock that makes changing blades fast and effortless. Another nice feature this saw incorporates is the depth stop adjustment bolt and lock nut, which allows users to easily configure the correct depth setting.
The 3814 abrasive saw is made with cut and hardened helical-cut steel gears, which compared with straight gears are more durable, stronger and more efficient.
Miter cuts up to 45 degrees are possible thanks to the adjustable fence that allows for accurate angle adjustments and a locking vice with quick release lever will hold your material firmly in place. Minor adjustments can be made with the help of a crank and a lever will release the screw shaft.
This is an old design that has stood the test of time and still remains a favorite of many users all over the globe. The only criticism the saw receives is that the base isn’t as strong as some users would like and it feels a little flimsy. However, most users have no complaints at all.
It’s backed by a 1 year limited warranty.

- Miter cuts: Yes
- Warranty: 1 year limited warranty
The Pros
- Lock off button for added safety
- Comfortable handle
The Cons
- Flimsy base
- Vice not very effective
- Messy
Overview
The Ironton Dry Cut Metal Saw is a powerful mid-range saw that is great for cutting tubing and pipes. It has a cutting capacity of 4-3/4 inches for round material and 4-1/8 inches for square pieces. It can also make miter cuts up to 45 degrees thanks to the tool-free adjustable guide plate. The saw is made from an aluminum base and features an ergonomic “D” shaped handle to help you work longer and with greater efficiency. It comes with a long-lasting 14 inch carbide-tipped blade, designed to make cuts with minimal to no heat produced.
Another great feature of this saw is the thumb lock botton that stops your saw from accidentally starting when you are making adjustments.
It comes with a quick-release vice to hold your cutting material in place but unfortunately, a lot of people have reported that the vice does not function well and doesn’t hold material still during operation. Other users reported that this saw is very messy and sends debris flying all over their workspace. It has a base design very similar to the Bosch chop saw and is also reported to feel flimsy and unstable during use.
This is a mid-range saw that is designed for home use but won’t stand up to professional and heavy use. It comes with a 1 year limited warranty.

10. SKILSAW SPT64MTA-01 14” Chop Saw
Features –
- Motor: 15 Amp
- RPM: 3000
- Blade size: 14 inch
- Weight: 34 lbs
- Miter cuts: Yes
- Warranty: 1 year warranty
The Pros
- Fairly lightweight for a 14 inch saw
- Precise cuts
The Cons
- Lot’s of sparks
- Wobbly blade guard
- Wrench needed for miter fence adjustment
Overview
The Skilsaw SPT64MTA-1 is a lightweight chop saw featuring a stamped steel base and an abrasive cutting disc. Its lightness makes it great for storage or carrying but also means that it’s not a great option for heavy use in construction or manufacturing environments.
It has a cutting capacity of 4-3/4 inches for round material and 4 inches for square pieces. It also features an easy to adjust depth setting and will perform miter cuts up to 45 degrees. Unfortunately, a wrench is required to adjust the angle when making miter cuts, decreasing productivity and efficiency, making this a better option for those looking to perform mostly square cuts.
The ergonomic D shaped handle is comfortable and makes operation a breeze, allowing you to cut for longer periods without needing a break. It also comes with a locking pin that makes sure the saw stays locked down during transportation, a better option than the traditional chain method.
The blade guard does a good job of deflecting the sparks during cutting which is a good thing because this saw sure does throw a lot of sparks, making it difficult to keep on eye on what you are cutting. At the end of the day though, it’s an abrasive saw, so sparks are to be expected. Unfortunately, I’ve heard quite a few complaints about the blade guard wobbling alot during operation, so I hope this is something that Skilsaw addresses in the near future.
It comes with a 1 year warranty.

Chop Saw Buying Guide
Now that we’ve talked about the features and benefits of these saws, I want to take the time to go over what to look for when purchasing a chop saw. Due to the large range of saws available, you might have some uncertainties when it comes to choosing the right saw for you. As a professional tradesman, I need to have complete trust in my tools, so over the years I’ve gained an eye for the features I want each of my tools to have. I’ve listed below a few chop saw aspects that are important to consider before you make your purchase – those being: its blade, the saw’s power, vice assembly, spark deflectors, guards, safety features and warranty terms. It’s also very important to find the saw that fits your needs.
But before I talk about all that, I want to first discuss exactly what chop saws are and how they work.
What Are Chop Saws?
Chop saws are powerful saws designed to make fast and accurate cuts through metal, plastic, and wood. They are the ideal tools for making smooth and precise square cuts over and over again. Most modern saws do feature adjustable fences or guide plates that allow the operator to make angled miter cuts up to 45 degrees but the main function of these saws is to produce straight cuts.
The most common uses for these saws are metal cutting applications like cutting molding and frames, pipes, metal conduits, tubing and rebar, making them ideal tools for metal fabricators, plumbers, gas fitters, electricians, steel fixers, etc. Basically, anyone who needs to cut larger lengths of metal into shorter, more-usable pieces. They are also used a lot when cutting large amounts of lumber when a straight cut is the main cut that is needed. When cutting lumber for smaller applications, a miter saw is generally used instead.
When I was an apprentice, we’d do most of these cuts with a hacksaw or an angle grinder at best. I look back and think about all the time we could have saved if the boss invested in a high-quality chop saw for the tool kit.
How Does A Chop Saw Work?
Chop saws work by plunging a fast-spinning circular blade down into a piece of material. They only function in this manner and it should be noted that the material can never be brought toward the spinning saw. They are powerful saws and therefore can be dangerous if used in an unsafe or improper way. I’ll also mention that a chop saw is at it’s safest when it is spinning at full speed or the blade is completely stopped. If running at half speed, the saw might not be powerful enough to cut through the material, causing the saw to buck or catch the material and spit it from the saw. Neither of those is a good thing.
In order to make a cut as safe as possible, start the saw when the blade is away from the material and don’t make contact with the material until the blade is spinning at full speed.
During a cut, it’s important that you allow the blade to smoothly work its way through the material. Never try to force the blade, this is dangerous and also results in poor quality cuts.
Once the cut is complete, slowly raise the blade back up and away from the cut material and disengage the power.
What To Look For When Choosing a Chop Saw
Blades
When it comes to blades, the biggest differences are seen in the metal cutting blades. You’ve got two main types – the cold saw blade and the abrasive blade.
Abrasive blades or abrasive cutting discs, as they are also known, are usually made from aluminum oxide. They produce a lot of sparks during use and after cutting, the material is usually hot as hell. The advantages of these blades are they are lightweight and cheap. But on the other hand, the don’t last as long as the more expensive cold saw blades.
Cold saw blades are metallic blades that look a lot like wood-cutting blades. They have carbide-tipped teeth and are able to cut material without producing heat, either on the blade or on the material. They also produce minimal sparks and leave the cut section smooth and free from burrs. They last longer than abrasive blades and can be sharpened when needed, unlike abrasive blades which must be discarded after they are worn-down by use. Cold saws also cut a lot faster than abrasive saws – up to four times faster.
The most commonly used chop saw blade sizes are 12 and 14 inches. Other sizes include 7-1/4”, 8”, 10”, and 15”.
Please note that you should never put a cold saw blade on an abrasive saw or vice versa. Doing so will only damage the blade and void your warranty.
Abrasive Blades
Pros
- Cheaper
- Lightweight
Cons
- Cut slow
- Leave burrs
- Produce lots of sparks
- Leave material piping hot
Cold Saw Blades
Pros
- Cut fast
- Accurate and smooth cuts with no burrs
- Minimal sparks
- No heat
Cons
- Expensive
- Heavy
Motor
A good chop saw should have at least a 15 amp motor and at least 4 HP of power. The best saws have powerful motors but lower RPM, which reduces the amount of sparks produced.
And it’s always advisable to go with well-known and trusted manufacturers that produce reliable and powerful saws. This is especially important if you have a heavy workload and need your saw to produce great results cut after cut.
Vice Assembly
Having a sturdy and secure vice is also a must-have feature of a top-quality chop saw, as it’s what is holding the material in place during operation. I look for saws that feature quick-release or quick-lock features to speed up productivity and get me working faster. Make sure you do your research before purchase as some saws have a sub-par vice system that won’t hold material still during cutting. Just because it is a quick-lock vice doesn’t mean it will necessarily hold tight. It’s best to find out what other users are saying about a particular saw before you decide to make a purchase. In saying that, most manufacturers produce quality vices and clamps and popular brands like DeWalt and Makita are very reliable.
Fence
A saw fence is designed to provide an accurate cutting angle between the blade and the edge of the material you are cutting. It’s vital for accuracy and speed. An inaccurate fence pretty much renders a chop saw useless. Have an adjustable fence allows you to make angled cuts at precise angles.
Spark Deflectors
Spark deflectors feature on most chop saws and as you can probably guess from the name, they are designed to deflect sparks away from the saw operator and working materials. Good chop saws should have adjustable spark deflectors.
Safety Features
An operator’s safety while using a saw is the number one priority. Basic safety features on a chop saw must include a blade guard and/or an eye protection plate. Other great safety features that are available are safety triggers that won’t allow unintentional operation of the saw and electric brakes that work by reversing the flow of electricity to the motor and are designed to stop the blade spinning within 2 seconds.
And remember, you should always be wearing the correct personal protective equipment whenever you are operating your saw.
Power tools are dangerous things and accidents do happen. So it’s vital that you follow proper safety precautions, especially when using a sharp, cutting tool like a chop saw. If you lose a finger, it won’t be growing back!
Warranty
Most of the top manufacturers will offer at least a three-year warranty, some even up to 5 years. The longer the warranty, the better, as you never know what might happen in the future. Even the best manufacturers have faults sometimes. The thing about a good manufacturer is they usually have great customer service and warranty claims are hassle-free.
DeWalt offer 3 years warranty, 1 year free servicing, and a 90 day money-back guarantee in case the product doesn’t live up to your expectations.
Conclusion
Choosing the right chop saw to suit your needs can be a little confusing at times. With so many great options out there, selecting one can get a little overwhelming. I hope this list has helped to narrow down your options and has given you a clear guide as to what features to be on the lookout for.
My first choice for a quality chop saw is the DeWalt DW872. It’s the best cold cut chop saw around and it’s backed by DeWalt’s excellent warranty terms and reputation for quality, so you can rest assured you’ve made the right choice.
If you are after value for money, I recommend another DeWalt – the D28710 14-Inch Abrasiveness Chop Saw. It has the same DeWalt quality as the cold cut saws mentioned above but the abrasive blade makes it a more budget-friendly package. It’s an excellent addition to your tool collection and is great for home renovators and those serious about their DIY work.
A chop saw is such a powerful and reliable cutting tool and is a must-have for anyone involved in metalwork, from DIY beginners to full-time contractors. I hope you found this guide informative and it makes your decision a little easier. Thanks for reading and I’d love to hear what you have to say about your chop saw experiences in the comment section below.
